Rotary in our District

Cheryle Berry
DG Cheryle Berry

Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland is divided into ‘Districts’, and ours is called District 1220, including parts of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Please visit our District website for more information.

Our current District Governor (2018-2019) is the dynamic and inspirational Cheryle Berry M.B.E from the Clay Cross club in Derbyshire.

To add to Cheryle’s impressive list of lifetime achievements, including being a medical Doctor, she has been working recently with Virtual College to bring to us the campaign, ‘Prepared to Save a Life’ – a free online life-saving course. It is a truly innovative way to help each and every one of us be a potential life-saver.

Please visit Virtual College today and register to do this free training, supporting Cheryle’s fantastic innovation and potentially saving the lives of those around you.

Our District Governor Elect (DGE) – or our next governor – is David Hood from the Wirksworth Club.

Every year, we have a District Conference, which features inspirational speakers and visitors from around the globe. Register here to join us in Scarborough on 4th-6th October 2019!

Please watch the video below, which was produced by one of our club members, Alicia Reade to promote the upcoming conference. The song was specially written and performed by Alicia, with contributions from club members across our district! The video also features our Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland President Elect, Donna Wallberg, and District Governors Elect from the whole region, including our own DGE, David Hood. It was David who requested the Scottish feel to the song in order to promote his upcoming conference, being a proud Scot!

Helping out in the Community

Over the last few days, members of the Rotary Club of Belper and Duffield have been hard at work at various community events in Belper and surrounding areas. Their biggest commitment was to provide a team of eight stewards all day from 7am for the Belper Food, Drink and Craft Festival that took place across the town centre of Belper on Sunday, 7th July. Members of the club provided over 80 hours of work in total for this very busy event. The town centre was full of visitors enjoying themselves all day.

Rotary members helped by manning road closures and ensuring the safety of pedestrians in the Market Place whilst traffic was moving to and from the Coppice Car Park. In addition to their work at the Food Festival the Rotary Club also had stalls over the last couple of weekends at Duffield Carnival and at Little Eaton Carnival, providing games with prizes for children and their parents. Lots of fun for all.

On a different level, club members were also involved in their regular monthly litter pick across Belper, when several bags of litter were collected from various areas around the town. King Street during the Belper Food Festival

During the afternoon the outgoing President Hilary was honoured to present two Paul Harris Fellowships (PHF) to two separate individuals. PHF’s are awarded by Rotary Clubs to people who by their actions have demonstrated, with distinction, a devotion and loyalty to their communities. The award is named after the founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris.

The second PHF Award was made to Jackie Newbury. Jackie has been the inspiration behind the “Derby Soup Run” for over 30 years. This is a charitable organisation that provides a hot meal each night for homeless or destitute people. Jackie spoke at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club and the members were so impressed by her dedication and hard work that it was agreed to make the PHF Award to her. She is the chairman of the Derby Soup Run and manages several teams of volunteers who turn out every night to provide a little warmth and comfort to those who are less fortunate.
